Okay, “crazy” might be a bit of an exaggeration, but this was our last romantic night out on the town for quite some time. As many of you loyal followers know, my wife and I are expecting our first child (Aida Marie) in early February. So yes, now that I think about it… “crazy” will indeed be an appropriate word to describe our lives in 2016. So, before baby Aida takes over our lives entirely, I wanted to make a few guests posts looking back on some great times from 2015.
I think Kate would agree that sometime in 2015 we officially became full blown “Foodies!” We are truly fortunate to live in the area we do, but with so many options to choose from, finding a place to eat can sometimes be overwhelming. However, one thing we can always come to an agreement on is brunch reining supreme! Here are my top 5 brunch spots in the DMV (District, Maryland, Virginia) for 2015.
5. Ford’s Fish Shack – Ashburn/South Riding, VA
Ford’s is without a doubt one of the most consistent Seafood Restaurants in the area. Reasonably priced and family owned, Ford’s delivers a true taste of the Northeast through its “Lobstah” rolls, Maine Chips and Angry Mussels (Kate’s personal favorite). What puts this place over the top is the Sunday Brunch. Try the Eggs BLT, French Toast, or Surf and Turf Omelet–and go easy on the mini blueberry muffins they bring you before the actual meal! One last tip for the first timer – Be sure to call ahead and put your name in the list if you plan on going to dinner between the hours of 6-8 PM. This place fills up quickly!

4. Red Fox Inn – Middleburg, VA
Located in the Southwest corner of Loudoun County, The Red Fox Inn is the oldest operating Inn in the United States. If you’re looking for an upscale brunch experience this place is “The Truth.” Pick from an option of 2 or 3 courses and prepare to be happy for the rest of the day. While Red Fox isn’t cheap (will run you about $35-40 per person) it serves the best pastries I’ve ever eaten and has a true “Southern Charm.”
3. Blue Ridge Grill (BRG) – Leesburg/Brambleton, VA
Best margarita in Loudoun County – Check! Best Prime Rib in Loudoun County – Check! Complimentary funnel cake sticks – Check! Blessed to have two locations to choose from, BRG is a personal favorite in the Thomas household. Offering everything from pancake specials to Monte Cristo sandwiches, BRG is as consistent as they come. If you are torn between what to order I recommend the Country Breakfast–you won’t be hungry for the rest of the day, but food comas aren’t a bad thing, are they?

2. Magnolias at The Mill – Purcellville, VA
“Maggie’s” to the locals is a sister restaurant to a few other favorites of ours – Tuscarora Mill, South Street Under, and Fireworks Pizza (all located in my hometown of Leesburg, VA). If you like extensive beer and cocktail lists you’ll see why I like this place so much. Tons of great local beers on tap and a Spicy Bloody Mary that will knock your socks off. Kate also claims the Tomato Smoked Gouda to be one of the best soups she’s ever eaten. Maggie’s is also a personal favorite in terms of ambiance as it’s one of the coolest buildings you’ll ever see. Be sure to check out future events as just recently they hosted an Oyster/Pig Roast!
1. Firefly -Washington DC
How did we find this place? A big thanks to our friends Nick and Ashlyn at who suggested we take a trip to the big city and try one of their favorite spots. Firefly is a bit small so I suggest you make a reservation. Have you ever eaten Parmesan truffle fries? If not, this might change your life! Pair this with the breakfast tacos I ordered and it was the best brunch I had in 2015. Remember–park on the street and be sure to have a good backseat driver to help navigate through the big city!

There you have it–my first official food review of sorts! I hope your future brunch experiences are as fantastic as ours were in 2015 and help make your Sundays out with loved ones that much better!
Next week: my favorite things from 2015. Boom!
