Lately, pregnancy hormones have me feeling all out of sorts. Little things that would normally just be a small annoyance now fill me with a white hot rage. If I’ve allowed myself a small cup of coffee that day, then the rage simmers just below the surface, allowing me to at least function through the day. Otherwise, hell hath no fury like a pregnant woman who has received one too many stupid emails.
To offset my emotions, I decided to write a blog post and focus on 20 things making me happy right now. This list will likely be my mantra until it is finally acceptable to calm myself with coffee (and wine) again.
1. We’re expecting a baby girl! This is the big thing getting me through this week–knowing little Aida Marie is on the way. Now it’s time to really start planning!

2. Mindy Kaling’s new book, Why Not me?
She’s been one of my favorites since the moment she described the process of a Netflix que when she was Kelly Kapoor on The Office, and both of her books provide a good laugh and lots of wisdom. Example:
Leggings and boots, I know, whatever–the real reason I’m excited about cooler temperatures is because that means I can get away with unshaven legs much longer than in the summer.
After what is sure to be a long day at work this Saturday, Matt is taking me to a restaurant that is built around the concept of a grilled cheese sandwich. I anticipate this to be one of the best days of my life.
8. My nieces
I’ve got one niece who cuddles and plays candy crush with me, and another who gave us a dance recital to the sounds of “Let it Go” and “Rhythm Riot” (or, as she described it, the “Ah Ah song”). Basically, they’re the best.

9. The arrival of a new Longchamp bag
I’ve done really well with a spending freeze this month–so well, in fact, that I decided to order myself a new purse to reward myself. Honestly, Longchamp is one of my favorite brands. I bought my first one in Paris almost six years ago, and other than a little wear on the corners, it has held up incredibly well, considering what I’ve put it through. Plus, they came in a variety of sizes and awesome colors, and even the large size works great as an overnight bag. I’ve justified this because I can get a diaper organizer, and voila! Diaper bag! But we all know I’ll end up with a Kate Spade diaper bag….right, Matt? Right?
10. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
I can’t believe it has taken me so long to watch this show–it’s hilarious. If you ever had any love for Colbert or Stewart, you will love this guy. Pulling this up OnDemand has been a great way to take my mind off my Humira shots, which seem to have become particularly painful during pregnancy.
11. Matt’s Face at the Baby Appointment
It was the best. I’ll never forget that moment when we looked at each other and found out baby is a girl.
|Much different from this face, which was only a few months before this Power Couple had a Power Baby on the way.|
12. Cuddles with the Dood
The only problem is, she gets the most cuddly right when it’s time for me to leave for work.
13. Mr. Darcy (the candle)
I found this at a local store in Winchester–they were burning the candle in store and I knew I had to have that intoxicating scent. It’s tobacco and vanilla and will sweep you right off your feet.
14. Our upcoming trip to Nashville
I get to spend time with my best friend and stand by her on her wedding day; have a little getaway with the love of my life; AND eat amazing food. This is a no brainer.
15. Letters to Aida
I decided I wanted to write letters to our children all throughout their lives, then hand over the letters on their 18th birthday (and these are handwritten, because I’m old fashioned and have a problem with buying cute notebooks). Last month, I bought a beautiful, Lilly Pulitzer notebook for that purpose (because I had a feeling), and I can’t wait to get started.
16. Cooking dinner with my husband
Now that Matt works from home, it means we have plenty of opportunities to cook dinner together, and it’s one of my favorite things to do. Even if he needs to work late, he’ll take a break and dice whatever needs dicing and season whatever needs seasoning. Sometimes, he’s really busy and leaves it to me–that means I’m calling in the pizza order or making the five minute drive to Chipotle.
Turns out, twenty is a lot, and this list already feels quite long, so I’ll end it here. What are the things filling you with happiness this week?
